I read a post on Reddit's Fat FIRE community (if you're unfamiliar with this term, Google it!)A man asked why people want to retire early in this group. Do they not find joy or fulfillment in their work? He understands not wanting to be a cog in the wheel of a major corporation or stuck in a profession you absolutely hate...but not work at all? What will you do with your time after you retire early?This got me thinking. It's so important to have clarity and a vision of what we want in our life and what's important. And our financial goals need to reflect that. My dad retired at 60. He worked his @$$ off to be able to do so. Now, at 65, he's looking for part-time work because he's bored. 🤷♀️ This is extremely common. Sitting around doing nothing all day is wonderful for a few months, even a few years. But I promise you'll get bored if you don't have a sense of clarity or purpose for your life. This post isn't just for those a few years from retirement - this is for younger folks as well. Money for the sake of money is pointless. So I challenge you to the following:Start thinking about what you value. Get really detailed on how you want to spend your time when you reach financial independence. What's going to give you purpose and fulfillment throughout your life? This book suggests that this approach can lead to missed opportunities and experiences that would have been better enjoyed at a younger age. But there's an existential edge to the financial debate, and questioning the utility of early retirement if it comes at the cost of "Net Time Happiness" today is provocative.While #FIRE followers might find freedom in the idea of early retirement, "Die with Zero" contends that true freedom lies in the maximisation of life experiences, not just financial figures. Mindful #YOLO, anyone?The author poses an existential question: Is retiring early to enjoy life later a more fulfilling choice than enjoying life as it happens, even if that means working longer? 🤔🧑🤝🧑Who's it for?- Young adults intrigued by the #FIRE movement but looking for alternative perspectives.- Mid-lifers contemplating early retirement but also curious about maximising life's experiences now. What age do you want to retire?This was a question recently asked to my husband and me in a financial planning discussion.And my answer was vastly different from what it was even just four years ago.I don’t have an age when I want to retire.I love my work.
